What is AGPLv3, and why does it matter?

Copyleft, in plain English

"Copyleft" is a play on "copyright." Where copyright says "you can't copy this without permission," copyleft says "you can copy and modify this freely — as long as you keep it open and let everyone else do the same."

It's a self-perpetuating commitment to openness. Anyone who builds on copyleft code is legally required to release their additions under the same terms. No private forks. No closed-source extensions. No quiet license switches.

The spectrum of openness

Where every community platform sits

PlatformLicenseWhat it means
Mighty Networks, Circle, Skool, Heartbeat, Bettermode Proprietary Closed source. You have no rights to the code. Can't audit, fork, or escape.
Ghost MIT (permissive) Open — but anyone can fork it and make it proprietary. No protection.
WordPress + BuddyPress, Discourse GPLv2 (weak copyleft) Open — improvements must be shared if software is distributed. SaaS hosts can keep their changes private.
Qbix Platform (Really Ours), Mastodon, HumHub, Forem AGPLv3 (strong copyleft) Open — improvements must be shared even by cloud hosts. The strongest commitment to the commons.

Why we picked it

Every successful open-source platform that grew popular has been pressured to weaken its license — Elasticsearch, Redis, MongoDB, and Terraform all "rug-pulled" once cloud providers built competing services on their code. They could only do it because their licenses left room.

AGPLv3 doesn't. Once code ships under it, no one can quietly reel it back in — not us, not future owners, not cloud hosts, not investors. The code Qbix releases today stays open, forkable, and yours forever.

That's the point.
